Lacquer is the Queen of Vietnam handicraft. Making lacquer ware is a complex and lengthy process, using highly toxic materials; the base can be made of solid timber, bamboo, plywood or MDF depending on the shape of the product. Each item individually crafted has bee through 28 stages and can take up to 80 days to create. The raw product is examined and any crack or indentations are sealed with natural resin .The product is left to dry in a wet room for 2 days then the first coat is sanded after checking that the natural resin has no effected the intended shape, then the product is covered with a fine cotton gauze to ensure that there will be no cracking at the later stage. After a number of base applied, each taking 2- 5 days to dry .The artist applied paint, mother of pearl have broken eggshells. Up to ten more coats of lacquer are then applied, with sanding between each coat. Finally, one of two days worth of rubbing with the palm of the had bring out the shine.
How to take care of lacquer product: Lacquer product has seventeen layers. Please handle with care .Do not soak, only wipe with a damp cloth after use .The seventeen layer make it very durable and you will have a years of use if you look after it properly. It can stand at high temperatures for serving food and hot dishes can be placed directly onto it. Most of all enjoy lacquer product has been totally made by hand, no two pieces are quite alike. There is no other exactly the same as your original.
